An initial meeting with a client is very essential if you want to establish a good business relationship with them. Whatever you do in the meeting will determine the future of a business deal with the client.
To avoid some unnecessary mishaps in the meeting, you may use the following to guide you:
- Prepare yourself: No matter how many business meetings you have been to, it is always imperative that you prepare-each time. Learn about the company. In this way, you will find out what areas in their business can highlight the importance of your services or products. Also, it is important that you get to know who you will be talking to prior to the interview. In this manner, you will be able to prepare on how to deal with the person.
- Outline your objectives and goals. Being conscious of the objectives of the meeting keeps you focused. These will guide you on how you will go about the meeting and keep you reminded on what you need to achieve at the end of it. Not knowing what is there to be achieved will not only cost you time but the deal itself.
- Ask the right questions. Doing so will get you the right things that you want and need. It will allow you to get information that you can use to achieve your objectives. Asking probing questions rather than only mere yes/no questions. This will provide you a chance to know more about the client. Ask questions that will give you information on the company’s needs, their goals and the challenges they are facing. These pieces of information will guide you on what strategies to take to achieve your goal. The key is to let the prospective client talk. This will give the prospect the impression that you are really interested in his/her welfare (as should be the case). Listen and talk less.
- Gain the prospective client’s trust. You must be able to establish rapport the first few seconds that you have met. A smile and a firm handshake are small things but are important factors to winning a client. Dress properly and be confident. Make the client like you. No one wants to make business with someone they do not like. Most importantly, in your presentation, you must be able to highlight the credibility and the expertise of your company in addressing his company needs. Make it known that it is good and profitable to do business with you.
- Be prepared with other things. Materials for the presentation should be prepared ahead of time. Failure to do so would make you look unprofessional. This will have an impact on how they perceive your company too. It is also to your best interest to find the right venue for the meeting. Choose one where you can minimize distractions and conducive for a productive meeting.
So these are only the basic guidelines to achieving a successful initial meeting with a prospective client. One thing you need to remember is to follow up. A lot of deals aren’t closed during initial meetings. Therefore it is imperative that you do a follow up. Prospective clients also need time to consider the things that you have discussed during your initial meeting. Keeping in touch with your clients will make them feel that you are concerned of their interests. This is one factor needed to develop a good relationship with your future clients.
