Whenever I hear the word “business”, the first thing that ever comes to my mind is corporate – look, wear, feel – and the whole company, a corporation. I always tend to think of the business-type people as those who wear three-piece suits, coat and ties, corporate dresses, formal blouses and skirts and the like – whatever that makes them look smart and classy.
Lately though, this has not always been the case. Many businesses today are run by whoever has the capital to invest, regardless the status or the income. The trend today has been the establishment of small and medium enterprises, whatever service in whatever aspect of life they may be providing.
We may be able to compare the changes of their styles in dressing to the evolution of the business world. Gone are the days of formal dressing, many business people wear even just plain house clothes – shorts and shirts will do. This just goes to show that starting up a business have also gone simpler, well not in terms of the paper work requirements, but with the financial aspect of it.
Many industries today require only a little capital to have it up and running. Creative people are able to think of ways to convert their skills and hobbies into something lucrative. Such examples can range from the simplest like accessory making or selling clothes or to the more complicated and needs-training skills like transcription or encoding jobs. |

Let us also not forget that even little “carenderias” (a Filipinized canteen) and “sari-sari stores” (mini stores selling in retail) can also be as competitive as the big corporations. In fact, they may probably have more customers than the bigger companies due to its cheaper price and easier-to-reach affordability to the ordinary people.
So you see, doing business and making it grow, does not always have to be big right at the start. Success doesn’t come overnight; it has to be worked on. It doesn’t have to hire the people with the most impressive resumes or the most number of experiences. Sometimes, you could even just go on a solo flight. One doesn’t have to wear the most formal clothes in the planet, just as long as you are comfortable. Sometimes, it doesn’t have to need so much money to start it – just some effort, hard work and a little luck.
Most importantly, businesses do not have to be complicated, nor does it need to have rules you implement to yourself to get it things done. Or maybe a little know-how would do, but beyond that, no one else has to dictate how you do things and how you want them done.
So why am I talking about this? It’s because many people are afraid. They look up to big companies around and one wrong move from them that leads to failure disheartens many aspiring entrepreneurs to go on with their passion and pursue their dreams.
One should never get too scared because it is only when you test the waters that you are able to learn and from there starts your ladder to success.
